As we continue on our journey through the Lenten wilderness, follow Jesus as he lives his 40 days in the desert. Be open to what emotions today’s illustration invokes for you, what details catch your eye, and consider why you might be affected by it in this way.

Then, to go deeper, if it’s helpful, contemplate each of the following questions, allowing time to fully answer each one:

Every rose has its thorn – and every journey has some brambles to catch us up. What thorns are poking at you these days? Do you ever just feel snagged in life – caught up, hooked, held back? How do you avoid the thorns or break away from them? Why do there even have to be thorns in the first place? Where is God in the thorns – or just in the recovery from them? Do the thorns in life strengthen your resolve to Never Give Up? Though we have some thorns with which to contend, name them and give thanks they are not a crown upon our head, but something we can avoid/escape.
